SYNOPSIS
THE PORTRAIT OF HIMSELF
On another night in the streets of São Paulo, taking his photographs, Josias comes across a woman who asks for a photo of herself, taken by him reluctantly. Back at home, the image of the woman in the photo forces Josias to confront his recent past and unpack the last moment with his cross-dressing husband before he was murdered. The unearthed guilt from that day awakens in Josias ambiguous feelings and desires, silently denied by him.

THE PHOTO
I HAVEN'T TAKEN
The short film, written and directed by screenwriter and director Marcelo Meniquelli, speaks about affection or the lack thereof, about accepting others or oneself, but it also speaks about denial and its consequences.
To deny or accept? To care or reject? The film addresses these questions that reflect in other people the mirror of ourselves. Issues present in our time that have caused great damage in a society that has become accustomed to judging and condemning anything that is not normative.
The artist and his art
Another aspect addressed in "The Photo I Haven't Taken" is how the artist creates their art. In the case of our protagonist, a photographer, he encounters a mishap and ruins what would have been the last photo of the love of his life. A disposable photo in that moment, but he, as an artist, in the pain of his loss, sees something valuable in that click of his camera and it ends up serving as a source of inspiration for his work.

We are aware of the killings against LGBTQIA+ individuals in Brazil, making the country the most violent against this community - currently at an extremely high level of vulnerability. In addition to the deaths, the acts of cruelty towards the LGBTQIA+ community are terrifying. These aggressions often surpass what one would even find in horror or crime movies.
Intolerance, lack of empathy, and denial of others generate alarming statistics. It portrays a disease that seems to have no cure.
The short film "The Photo I Haven't Taken" confronts us with these issues, but with a breath of hope. Because nowadays, we know that hope is the fuel that propels us forward in the pursuit of a more equal and diverse society. Fear cannot paralyze us. We must remain vigilant, but it is also important to continue and resist, in the name of those who fought so that we could be here, discussing more openly and fighting even harder for equity.
